We hand-build commuting and touring-quality recumbents and tricycles, industrial prototypes and a wide range of vehicles for people with special needs. All of our vehicles are designed to use standard, off-the-shelf components, making servicing easy and inexpensive. All come with a lifetime frame warranty. Available options for all vehicles include racks, fenders, chain guard, computer, lights, and a safety flag.
Our recumbent cycles are designed for comfort and efficiency. The upright seating position is more comfortable than a regular upright bicycle's, and allows you to look around and enjoy the scenery while riding. Our designs are the result of years of experimentation and hands-on testing.
When you think of adult tricycles, you probably think of the clunky looks-like-an-oversize-kid's tricycle. Our tricycles, are as far from that as a race car is from a shopping cart. Real, comfortable, usable, and efficient - yet easy to ride. You don't have to worry about balancing them, and they steer and brake stably and quickly. Some models are foldable and portable.
We also build custom vehicles for people with various handicaps. Special Purpose Vehicles has outfitted people with problems ranging from bad backs or necks to cerebral palsy or missing limbs with solutions ranging from standard recumbents to tricycles that convert to wheelchairs.
Special Purpose Vehicles has also exploited Bill Darby's industrial design background in building prototypes for a variety of alternative-fuel and human-powered vehicle manufacturers. He has designed and made models -- from first working prototype to final pre-production -- of several energy-efficient, technologically advanced vehicles. This has evolved into Special Purpose Vehicles' strength and its primary focus for the future.
